Hell Yeah!

Post by Alluveal »

I just had to shout from the rooftops. I got a job! I received a research assistantship through the university here. Tuition paid through 2015. Generous monthly stipend. Health insurance.

The research project is funded by IARPA. We are one of three universities that were chosen to create a video game that will help teach government agents about cognitive bias. Apparently, this is a very difficult thing to teach in the traditional method (and retain at a decent level). My department is working on the education aspect of it, coding computer game engagement (physical cues), implementing educational theory and so forth.

Very awesome position.

The cool part, it will allow me to pursue a doctorate in gaming studies (with a focus on engagement/education). So, I could be Dr. Lulu soon.

And I will be a Dr. in gaming.

Eat that, people who thought gaming did nothing for my career and life!

HA!

You are going to end up SOOOO frustrated with people who can't recognize their own cognitive biases. ;)

Congrats though.

Dd, yeah, no kidding. But, we're taught that everyone has bias and this game will (hopefully) help with the self-awareness aspect of it all. We aren't trying to change peoples' bias. Research has proven that doing so in many situation is futile. But, yeah. Fortunately, I'm not too hands-on with the psychological aspect of this--more on the learning/engagement process.

The three biases we'll be focusing on are:

blind spot
fundamental attribution error
confirmation bias (which has been the most challenging for everyone on the team so far)

Congrats, Lulu! Sounds like it's a fun gig.

I nearly completed a psych degree before turning my attention to hockey and I can tell you, confirmation bias is total pain in the ass! Haha.
