Have A Cozy Solstice: Hope you survive the winter

Post by Garrdor »

Hope you have insulated households, father winter's fingers will creep into your skin and snatch the life right out of ya.

Happy Saturnalia.

Over half of my windows are from around the 60's....(shakes fist) I need to replace like 60% of the windows in my house.

We got lucky because neither of us knew the first thing about living in a cold weather climate. I didn't even notice the windows until someone pointed them out to me. This is our 8th winter in Spokane now and we're pretty much pros. I love this rural, rugged area. I'm slowly turning redneck. This year saw all of us get something Carhartt for Christmas haha.

Hey maybe you can give me some recommendations for window types! The sky isn't the limit, but I'm willing to pay for decent quality.

I'm not very knowledgeable about windows. I am about Microsoft Windows though, haha.

AFAIK, ours were built custom for the house during its construction. They have fabrication type stickers from a local company. I do know that double-paned is what you want, and they're not just good for insulating heat either. They are wonderful sound insulators too. I have no idea what they cost, but I do know what they save in heating costs, which is a lot.

Our heating problems have mostly revolved around the door seals and such. I use a laser thermometer to find the cold spots, as well as mess with the dogs. Zoey thinks the red dot lives in the hallway. I catch her looking for it once in a while. Run it around seams that connect your house to the outside and it'll show you the cold spots instantly.

You want to look into Vinyl replacement windows...in most cases..you can get very good windows for not alot of coin...they measure the inside dimensions where your old windows slide up and down...then when the new windows arrive they just remove the upper and lower sashes along with the counter-balances and inner mouldings until they have a somewhat smooth framework..then just place the replacement windows into your exsisting framework..run some galvinized screws in and bam..your done..depending on the number of windows..this is usually done in a day...For the sides of your home that are exposed to the sun..go with the Low-E glass...

Your local Lowe's or Home Depot can hook you up...

Good Luck!

It's a form of reverse trolling.
