no raids in TESO
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/19/ ... be-awesome
There are no raids, after all – "That's not Elder Scrolls," says Game Director Matt Firor – but there are four-man dungeons and three-faction open PvP with sieges in the beleaguered province of Cyrodiil.

I think that is going to be a hard sell. I would think by this point Guild Wars 2 has locked up the "dungeon only" experience.

GW2 tops out. The dumbest gear idea for a video game ever. Makes me angry. Such a great game ruined by 1 stupid concept.

the Imperial race being locked behind the paywall of a CE has caused a stink with many players

Matt's comments from August
http://www.nowgamer.com/news/2051042/th ... model.html
"Players will appreciate not having to worry about being 'monetized' in the middle of playing the game, which is definitely a problem that is cropping up more and more in online gaming these days," Explained Firor.

"The fact that the word 'monetized' exists points to the heart of the issue for us: We don't want the player to worry about which parts of the game to pay for - with our system, they get it all."
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/vi ... ctions-Too
"Anything in the core game is included in the subscription price."

this preview didnt mince words
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/02 ... ls-online/
While my expectations of Elder Scrolls Online were not enormous, after the disappointed reactions of earlier looks, I like me a bit of solo MMOing. Trundling through quest arcs in that idly satisfying, box ticking way. It recently got me through all of Neverwinter’s launch content, well, content. So, I figured, why not the same for ESO?

Well, it’s just… it’s just a bit boring.

While each (npc) contained some lovely moments, there was an abundance of witless drivel being murmured by bored actors.

the difference (in Skyrim or Oblivion) was, you could just hop on your horse and ride off up a mountain to watch a sunset, before stumbling on a hidden cave leading to a ruined dungeon packed with marauding skellingtons, where you find a book that tells you about a secret place in a nearby tower… In ESO’s first few hours, you follow the marker to the next quest giver.

There’s no impact to the combat, and while it shares The Secret World’s cone-of-attack dodging, it feels loose, flimsy and detached, like Elder Scrolls games don’t. Compared to MMOs, it’s regular, uninspired. Compared to the series from which this game spawns, it’s very disappointing.
The Elder Scrolls Online: Skyrim skin can’t make up for MMORPG mediocrities
http://www.vg247.com/2014/02/10/the-eld ... iocrities/
for me the real issue is that while I did not go into The Elder Scrolls Online expecting Skyrim multiplayer, I also did not go in expecting to be utterly bored – and I was.

What The Elder Scrolls Online can teach us about tutorials in the age of free-to-play
http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/Nicholas ... toplay.php
The criticisms of TESO suggest that its initial experience is not trying to show you why this game is worth sticking with: it assumes that you are going to stick with it.

It doesn’t try to earn your love and respect. It assumes it.

In the era of Free-To-Play, with boundless choice and designers setting out to demonstrate to their players why their game is awesome in the first few minutes, this approach is going to be very challenging for Zenimax.
