DAOC: Trials of Atlantis
Massively multiplayer gaming is coming into its own as developers are expanding their future lineups to include online titles for both PC and console. For PC alone, there are more than just a handful of massively multiplayer games headed for release within the year, especially in the RPG genre. While gamers are eager for new MMORPGs to hit the shelves, returning to a familiar game is always comforting. Mythic Entertainment hopes to capitalize on the familiarity of Dark Ages of Camelot by releasing a new expansion entitled Dark Age of Camelot: Trials of Atlantis that takes you through the ruins of a lost civilization in search of their story.
The Once and Future Expansion
Trials of Atlantis brings the ancient civilization of Atlantis into the Camelot universe. Once a thriving civilization, the Atlantaens soon came to the understanding that their race would no longer flourish and that they would become extinct; consequently, they constructed a series of trials for future adventures to learn their secrets and access their powers. As an expansion pack, Trials of Atlantis will possess the same core gameplay as the full version of the game, yet adding new environments and activities that you can engage in throughout the game‘s massive world. Also included with the expansion is a graphical update for the entire game, raising the level of detail in environments with high-resolution textures.
Talk About Localization
The most apparent addition to the game is of course the Atlantaen civilization. While the race is presently extinct, you’ll explore their ruins in search for their history and secret powers. Traveling on the world map you can find archaeological sites marking findings of the Atlantaen culture. One site, the Hall of Heroes, is where you can begin your trials in the ruins of Atlantis. Texts on the walls of the ruins describe the civilization’s history and trials that you may face in the near future. Mythic has gone to the painstaking work of creating a unique Atlantaen language that is grammatically fully functional and used throughout the expansion.
Trial-Sized Skills
Once you’ve entered the trials, you’ll be presented with one of numerous skill-based missions that demand combat and puzzle solving to complete. While Mythic Entertainment had no comment as to the structure of the new missions, it was fairly evident that rather than employing an experienced-based system like many old-school RPGs, Trials of Atlantis will allow skill-based growth. It appeared that completing missions enabled you to gain abilities that you could use to conquer future missions.
Swimming with Sharks
Increasing you abilities and power is integral in progressing into the later stages of the game, as there are a number of environmental and enemy hazards that will stand in your way. A particularly interesting area we were shown was a nest of harpies that presented quite a problem for the player since they swarmed him with their screeching. Water possesses another threat unless the player casts a magical spell enabling him or her to swim underwater for a length of time; even more, sharks brood in the depths waiting for a tasty meal. We were told that a great deal of enemies will inhabit the land of Atlantis including multiple never before seen creatures. Expediting travel underwater, the game’s producer showed us how to ride a hammerhead shark. With most MMORPGs only offer horses and such for zoological transportation, Trials of Atlantis certainly gets an award for best mode of transportation in an MMORPG.
