This leads to an interesting military situation with the possibility of the Indonesian muslims being stirred up against the people providing them relief...

Looks like we are taking the right approach at least. Business as usual. I think we have to continue this way until threats become imminent. Otherwise we just play into the hands of people who would rather we not be there. It is unfortunate that charitable work is being viewed in political terms in almost every area this tsunami affected.
If these guys do happen to attack U.S. military forces providing aid in Indonesia I think we must also continue to do what we are doing, certainly take some precautions, but nothing too visible to the people being helped. As much as leaving the area might sound nice, the people causing problems are a tiny minority in Indonesia and are very unlikely to gain popular support agains U.S. aid efforts.

From what I read on the story to me it plays out like this.
They are there to gain anti-western support amongst the countries just as America is there in part to gain support for America (both are there to provide aid, but underlying politics are to gain support for thier cause by providing the aid). They won't attack America because it would damage thier ability to get support for thier cause as they see the Americans as trying to help and any attack on aid workers would sour people to the attacker's movement. If America decides to try and do something about the muslim extremist group then the same applies, people will be soured twords America and anti-American sentiment will only spread.
Right now for both sides the best that they can do is stalemate. Hand out supplies and help those in need and draw support to each side's cause.
Really sad that helping the needy has become a political gambit.
