Google Phone Number=map to your house!

Post by wende darling »

Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can
type someone's telephone number into the search bar
and hit enter and then you will be given a map to
their house. Everyone should be aware of this!

Please look up your own number. Read below for
details.

Think about it -- if a child, ANYONE gives out his/her
phone number, someone can actually now look it up to
find out where he/she lives.

The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. In order
to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to:
http://www.google.com/

Type your phone number in the search bar (eg
5555551212) and hit enter.

If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your
private information, simply click on Phonebook results
for your number above your phone number. Remove your
number at their request, but it takes 48-hours.

If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not
be in there, but it is a good idea just to check. If
your number does come up, when you hit Yahoo Map or
Map Quest, it will show you a direct map to your
house...

Your search - 812-XXX-XXXX - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:

- Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
- Try different keywords.
- Try more general keywords.

Also, you can try Google Answers for expert help with your search.

Actually, I googled my own phone number and it came up with the name and address of the guy who had my phone number before me, so no, not an urban legend. I haven't lived here terribly long (we aren't listed in the phone book either as far as I know) and we frequently get phone calls for the person who's name/address came up when I googled my number.

Unlisted numbers shouldn't show up, but as you've seen there's no guarantee everyone else that's had the number was also unlisted.

It's not like this is something new. It's been available for several years in one form or another.

Theoretically if given a phone number 30 years ago I could have simply gone through the white pages and found someones address. I've been using reverse phone look ups to get the addresses of strange phone numbers that show up on my caller id for years now. It's nothing new. Isn't it more likely the psycho child killer you are fearing is going to simply SEE your kid in your neighborhood and follow the kid home then it is that he will somehow convince your child, presumably over the internet, to give chester the molester his or her phone number and come hunt him or her down? I'd say 1000 times more likely...here's an idea, supervise your kids internet activity. I have to assume that is your fear because anyone she gives the number to in person doesn't need to use google to find her ,and anyone she is talking to on the phone already has her number. Don't be an alarmist.

I assume you're talking to me here, so let me just say that looking up MY phone number won't give you shit about me, not even my name. I didn't write what I posted, I copied and pasted it so I wasn't so much concerned about my kids giving out the phone number but I know that there have been people that I've given my phone number to as an adult who I wouldn't want to have my address (and since my phone number is almost always unlisted it's unlikely that reverse phone lookup will work but I do know that googling has turned up addresses for unlisted numbers) for a variety of reasons.

I, actually, don't fear any psycho child killers following my kids anywhere since my kids are only allowed to play in the back yard unsupervised and they wouldn't be walking around for psycho child killers to see them. How they would see my kids walking home from some random place and then contact them over the internet is beyond me. Wouldn't it be great if you could just magically contact someone who you saw walking down the street online w/o knowing anything about them? Yes, I'm sure that's 1000 times more likely to happen then say, a teenage girl giving her phone number to some guy at the mall and having that guy drop/throw away that phone number and someone else picking it up, seeing a female's name (or male if that's what they're into) and googling it to find the address. I used to find matchbooks with phone numbers in them all the time. Now, while it's not the smartest thing to put your phone number in a matchbook, that does not necessarilly mean that you are inviting crazy stalker to google your address and show up at your doorstep.

You're really paranoid. Anyone that knows your full name and the area code you live in can get your address and phone number with a little bit of social engineering, unlisted number or not. Once they have that they can get the license numbers of the cars in your driveway, and with that your DMV records. Social security numbers are more difficult now that identity theft is on everyone's hotlist, but still not impossible. With that you can get a credit history, and then you know just about everything there is to know about that person. All without Google or matchbooks.

This is nothing new. I've been able to get an address from a listed phone number (or an old listing) for at least 10 years. Like Bahd said, public record searches can pull in all sorts of information.

http://haines.com/ccdir1.htm .

Criss Cross directories have been easily accessible in paper form for at least 25 years (that is when I first came across them) and they hardly seemed like a new innovation at that time. It has been very easy to find people based on their phone number since long before Google existed.

If a person is truly worried about psycho's hunting them down my advice would be to not hand out their phone number to random bar patrons on the back of match packs. Lets face it the chances that the guy you are voluntarily handing the matches to is a psycho-stalker are probably greater than the chance of some random psycho-stalker finding the pack of matches and saying, "Hmmm, phone number with the name "Bunny" written above it, I think I'll find this persons address and go stalk and kill them."

There are numerous legitimate business reasons for Crisis Cross directories and websites that give this information (although many involve annoying people they are also popular with public service providers). There are also numerous other information tools that exist which allow cross referencing based on other personal data. We cannot get rid of these tools just because psycho's exist so it is in everyone's best interests to make sure you are not casually giving out ANY information about yourself if you are in a social setting this is likely to attract nutcases (ie bars, the Internet, etc..). If you do, they will find you if they so desire.

Akhbar

PS: If you are really paranoid about this stuff you have a lot more bases to cover than just Google although I guess making sure the information cannot be googled will deter the under 90 IQ stalker crowd.

I am not paranoid or worried about this, personally, I just thought that it would be of interest to other people.

I realize that reverse directories have been out there for a number of years, I also know that you can't get any info of people who aren't listed that way, but you can from the google search.

You're right Walrus, this has EVERYTHING to do with whether or not my legs are closed, idiot. I am almost 30 years old. The stupid jokes about my sex life and my kids are ridiculous and old. You'd think that by now, you'd be just as sick of it as I am. I mean, fuck, you've been making them for SIX years. You've spent six years insulting someone that you don't even know. It doesn't seem to matter what the topic is. Hell, it could be about baking cookies and if I started the thread then it would turn into one of my sex life. I've had enough. Find someone else to spew your disgusting hatred onto. I've got nothing to gain from you, and your apparent gain from me is to satisfy that bully inside you who couldn't come out when you were a kid...probably because you spent years being bullied. Grow the fuck up already.
