Democrats courting the child rapist vote

Felons allowed to vote..

The new bill proposed by the democrats will strip a right given to states by the 14th amendmant in addition to opening up the untapped, and heavily democratic, convicted murderer voting block. Dean was quoted as saying... "and we will commit armed robberies in Wisconsin, and then Washington, and in North Carolina!! We will lynch black people in Georgia, and then Florida, and then Virginia!! And then we will vote for the one party that stands for these high principles and personal character.. the Democrats... yearrrrrrggggg!!!" he then passed out leaflets urging his Deaniacs to call one parole officer a day urging them to get out the vote in 2006.

Okay I made up the Dean part... and the rest is pretty much a troll.. but felons voting... hmmmm..

If I recall correctly, felons who have served their full time in many states are given back their right to vote. That's all part and parcel of the 'served the punishment' thing.

[liberal]

The problem with taking away convicted felons' right to vote is that a disproportionate number of the poor and minorities get convicted of felonies. Especially the poor, although the race card is definitely in play here.

[/liberal]

Of course, a lot of those folks wouldn't vote anyway.

My main problem is the large number of nonviolent drug offender felons who've done their time. If Clinton or Bush had been busted, and couldn't buy their way out, they'd be inelegible to vote. If I'd been busted in the '80s, I'd be inelegible to vote.

BTW, great thread title. :D

Voting rights varying from state to state has been a fiasco. we need a single federal standard. I don't care if you ban them all or allow them all. Just as long as it's the same everywhere.

I can support felons serving time being denied the ability to vote, but I feel once a felon has been released back into society, the rights of citizenship should be accorded to them. It seems to me to be the American thing to do.

If the punishment is served, the offender believed 'reformed', then he should be a full member of society again. If he's not going to be a full member of society, then his punishment isn't over. If what he did was so vile that he cannot be afforded a voice in the government of his nation, why, again, is he not still behind bars or dead?

Encouraging participation in elections (and other civil acts) seems to me to be a laudable goal if we want true "correctrion" of felons. Also, I don't think (and never have) that a government should have a way to permantly exclude a citizen from participation in the electoral process. It's too easy to abuse.

I find it more interesting that idiots aren't allowed to vote in NM.

I think its best to look at this for what it really is. The vast majority of former felons are consider dead to the electoral process. Since the Dems got caught with their pants down in the last election with so many actually dead people on record having voted, they see this as a great opportunity to increase their numbers with people who are actually alive who they can vote for.

How many dead votes were there again?

Is it the same order of magnitude as the number of Democratic registrations destroyed by GOP folks?

I have a nephew that pleaded guilty to a felony assault on a drug dealer. He was 18 and what a way to start your adult life. BUT I was told by my sister that if he keeps his nose clean, in about 3 years he can go to a lawyer and have the felony removed from his record.

Now he served no time, but whats up with having a felony removed from your record??
