Republican Senator makes retaliatory investigations

Post by Relbeek Einre »

The story is this. Sen. Inhofe of Oklahoma chairs an environmental committee. The director of two environmental groups told the committee that the Clear Skies initiative (widely derided as the worst misnomer of a bill title in the Bush Administration's history) was a load of crap. Inhofe replied by directing the director to cough up documents related to its NPO status. The director - and some Democrats - are saying the obvious - that this is a misuse of Inhofe's power with the attempt to intimidate.

The punchline? This director is a Republican too.

>>>>"It has nothing to do with 'Clear Skies,' " he said. "If we wanted to intimidate them, we would have done it before they testified, not after.">>>>>>>

Priceless quote. Maybe someone should have asked if they were retaliating as oppossed to intimidating.

I really don't see what is so intimidating about the request personally. If they are what they have represented themselves to be (which seems likely) they should turn over the documents and be done with the matter.

Because it's -always- easy to make hay over detailed information about an NPO.

I'll give you this.... as it stands, the Clear Skies inititative is a bunch of hooey. It's an overall relaxation of pollution standards.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

The Senator from Oklahoma seems to be the wrong person to be making such a request. And it does seem fairly retributive. However...why the hell isn't NPO documentation published yearly? Certainly if a group is claiming the status...they should have to prove they deserve it to the public!

Membership lists are the key. After all, they must keep their lists of 'dissidents' updated.
