RIP Signor 007

Post by Partha »

No, not Sean Connery or George Lazenby or Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan.

I'm talking about the [urlhttp://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=564&e=10&u=/nm/20050304/ts_nm/iraq_italy_release_dc_3]Italian intelligence agent[/url] who got shot by coalition forces.

While rescuing a journalist.

Maybe Eason Jordan will get an apology when it all settles out, eh?

My question for the Itallians would be why they were speeding towards a road block since they had already secured the release of the hostage?

Really good question. Note that you say "road block" while all the stories say "check point."

Let's see how the story develops.

My understanding of the situation (this comes secondhand from soldiers who have served in Baghdad) is the road to the airport is known as "RPG Alley".

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7089948/

"The U.S. military said the car she was riding in after her release was speeding as it approached a coalition checkpoint in western Baghdad on its way to the airport. Soldiers shot into the engine block only after trying to warn the driver to stop by "hand and arm signals, flashing white lights and firing warning shots," the military said. "

"President Bush called Berlusconi and expressed his regret in a five-minute conversation, Bush spokesman Scott McClellan said Friday night. Bush then assured Berlusconi the incident would be "fully investigated," he said."

Now the woman is claiming that her captors warned her that the U.S. did not want her to return. She is saying she may have been targeted for assassination.

I have heard the woman claim they were not speeding, but seeing how she was just released I have to question her reliability.

And sorry the stories do say "check point" not "road block", but everything I know of check points in Iraq is that stopping or at least slowing to a crawl is required. If 10-15mph is the expected rate of speed and they were going higher then that then the claim that they were speeding would be valid.
End the hypocrisy!

the Us shooting at her because they didnt want her to return is a pretty stupid theory. They could have Killed her no questions asked, No press, Nothing. Random Insurgant attacks happen...

She's a hardcore leftisit who writes for the Manifesto. Not that she deserves to be shot, but you can't take what she says at face value. She's hardly an unbiased reporter.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

What a journalist who's been through the checkpoints many times observes about them.

I thought the article on checkpoints interesting, and the woman is journalist for a communist newspaper. Hating America is her stock in trade. I don't know exactly what happened, but I am sure that she is likely to read things badly.
